Growl of the Grimlow

This minigame is a preview for the RPG zine Letters from the Dark Vol. VIII: Lucky Stars. In that zine’s adventure the party explores an abandoned alien spacecraft called The Zenith. In one area, they find a virtual reality deck that traps them inside a medieval-themed adventure game called Growl of the Grimlow.

Growl of the Grimlow is a comedic, fourth-wall-breaking tribute to the classic text adventure games of the 1970s and 80s. It can be run as a standalone minigame, or it can be included as part of a science-fantasy adventure, as in Letters from the Dark Vol. VIII.

To play, the Game Master reads each area’s description aloud then presents a series of options to the players. Once the players have agreed on one option, the Game Master reads the results of their actions, good or bad. These consequences are resolved without the need for dice rolls.
